A Wine and Cheese Pairing How-to for the Holidays

Santa Ynez Valley Style

The holidays are upon us which most likely means you’re at least two drafts into guest lists and menus for an upcoming festivus get-together. Here in the Santa Ynez Valley, we love a good wine and believe, as tradition tells, that there are few better things to pair it with than cheese. We’ve created a mini pairing how-to for holiday events and even threw in a few beer options to ensure you’re covered when it comes to family and friends and their spirit of choice.

A few basic wine pairing principles:

Go White
When it comes to wine and cheese pairings, people tend to think red, but truth be told, white is where it’s at. As local winery, Bridlewood Estate Winery and Laura Werline, an award-winning author and authority on cheese, share, “Compared to reds, white wines, like Chardonnay, work better with most cheeses. Most people don’t like to hear this, but I promise you, it’s true.” The lack of tannins (textural elements like grape seeds, grape skins and oak that make wine taste dry) along with white wine’s lively acidity usually make it the better choice.

If Red, Go Light or Old
Just in case you insist, No way, no how can I go through the holidays without a glass of red wine – may we suggest you look for a lighter, older one? A light, low-tannin wine like a Beaujolais is a great choice. Just make sure to pick one that has had time to age because (vino nerd-alert) tannins mellow over time.

Pair like with like
Just as when you plan a meal and pair lighter wines with lighter foods and heavier wines with heavier foods, so too, light cheeses like goat cheese, tend to pair nicely with a crisper, lighter wine. The rule also applies to beer and cheese: pair mild with mild and intense with intense.

Pair From the Same Region
When in doubt, make this your go-to trick.

Salty with Sweet
A winning combo in all fields of food, the salty taste of a blue cheese and even some washed rind cheeses beautifully balance the sweetness of dessert wines.

Rich and Creamy with Bubbles
Champagne or any sparkling wine paired with a rich, creamy cheese is a great pleasure – and that’s what the holidays are for, right?

Planning your next wine adventure? Trying to sound like a wine expert at your next after work get-together? Or what about just looking for tips on a great bottle for your next date night? Have no fear, wine lovers. From touring Santa Ynez Valley to local wine events to vino 101, there’s most certainly a (wine) app for that.

Getting Connected in the Santa Ynez Valley

Santa Barbara Wine Tour AppSanta Barbara Wine Tour (East and West editions) – One reviewer said it best, “Don’t taste wine without it!” Complete with custom GPS interactive maps, behind-the-scenes videos, text narration, slide shows and picture galleries (that all run without cell reception) these twin apps take the guess-work out of vineyard hopping in Santa Barbara County. Plus, special offers like “2 for 1” tastings as well as discounts on hotels, restaurants and markets quickly make up for the app price.

Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Association Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Association – Combining a touring map and area events calendar with an interactive listing of wineries, restaurants, hotels and touring and tasting companies, the Santa Barbara County app is a one-stop shop for planning your wine expeditions. And on days when you simply want to go where the road takes you, their Wine Trails feature provides one-day suggestions of places to visit following seasonal, geographic or wine themes. Don’t forget to use the “Favorite” folder to store frequently used entries to make the journey as care-free as possible.

Santa Ynez Wine Map AppWine Map of Santa Ynez – A trusted source for locating tasting rooms and wineries in the area, the adventure begins when you let the Wine Map of Santa Ynez app lead the way.

Here are a few more of our personal favorites:

Wine Enthusiast Tasting Guide – Jam-packed with thousands of reviews and prices, this app is the perfect shopping partner for those moments when you’re standing in the wine aisle trying to decide what to bring to tonight’s party. Made by the editors of Wine Enthusiast Magazine, the app also dishes the latest in wine and travel news as well as teaches all you need to know to move from wine novice to vino expert.

America’s Wine Trails – Teaming up with industry heavyweights WineAmerica and Wines & Vines, this app crisscrosses North America, covering 270 wine trails from coast to coast.  Search by winery, wine trail or grape to find your next great vino adventure and document your personal travel notes in the app’s journal section.

Vivino Wine Scanner – Backed by Forbes and Venture Beat, Vivino is a perfect fit for the casual wine-drinker. Scan a wine label and use the image to look up the wine’s tech sheets, ratings, winemaker’s notes and more. Once you’ve tasted the wine, rate it based on a five-star scale to remember which ones you want to savor again and which ones you wish you could forget.

LocalWineEvents.com – Explore upcoming local wine and food events while on-the-go. The app lets you search your area as well as other cities to find and read event details, purchase tickets and check-in to events – all with a single click. This is the place to get in the (vi)know.

Wine Dictionary – Do terms like terroir, Bacchus or trocken ring a bell? If not, have no fear. Wine Dictionary, the secret to transforming into a true oenophile, covers 1,400 wine-related terms making it your go-to for your next wine-tasting, head-scratching conversation.
